What does it take for a man to run into a burning building when everybody else is running out?

Why do firemen leave their families each morning to risk their lives for strangers?

Baltimore, Maryland. Wintertime present day. A fire rages in a warehouse and Jack Morrison (Phoenix) rushes in to save a life. Just as he hands the person to another fire fighter out a window, Morrison is blown back into the building and falls through several floors.

Now, injured and unable to move, lost with no way of figuring out where he is, Morrison only has 30 minutes of oxygen and his walkie-talkie. And this where our movie begins.  From here we look back at Morrison’s life, why he became a firefighter, the impact it has on his family and two young kids, the tragedy of losing lives…all inter cut with the tense rescue efforts led by his Fire Chief Kennedy (Travolta).
