Residents Get Lessons On Fire Prevention

THE STAR, February 10

Residents of PKNS apartments in Seri Kembangan gained some tips on fire rescue and prevention from a demonstration held there on Sunday.

.

The demonstration was organised by PKNS Apartments Residents Association, in collaboration with the Malaysian Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association and Yayasan Salam Malaysia.

"With this programme, residents can foster closer ties among themselves and gain some knowledge on what to do in such situations," said residents' association chairman Samsudin Daud.

Yayasan Salam Malaysia executive director Paul Selva Raj said the programme was needed to create awareness among the public.

"Besides, we are trying to encourage more people, especially youths, to get involved in voluntary services as this years is declared as the International Year of Volunteers," he added.

The chairman of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Volunteers Asscoation, K. Balasupramaniam, conducted the demonstration.

He advised attendees to follow the "rule of 3Fs - Fight, Free, Freeze" in fighting a fire.

"If there is a minor fire, try to put it out with cloth or by leaning the item on fire against a surface like a wall or floor. If you can't fight it, try to get free," he said.

He advised residents to install smoke detectors and fire extinguishers which would enable them to escape easily from a fire.

"If you are trying to escape, don't stand but crawl along the wall to find doors or windows. If you are stranded in a room, freeze, block smoke from seeping into the room and cover mouth and nose with a wet cloth," he said.

He also gave some tips on what to do when there is a gas leakage and showed residents the way to use a fire extinguisher.
